CPS Run Amok

Have any of you been following the FLDS debaucle? I could write a tome about what I think of it, but The Common Room has already done it. She's so hot under the collar she can't stop writing about it. She does a great job and has some great links. I didn't link to one particular post because she has so much good stuff there I think you should dig around a little.

Let me just say. I do not support polygamy, or marrying off young girls to old men. And I most certainly do not support the government riding in and taking children based on anonymous, unsubstaniated phone calls. Unchecked power is never a good thing.

How Safe Is Your Stuff

I'm always trying to find ways to reduce the chemical soup that goes in and on our bodies. To that end I found a great website the rates the chemical toxicity of personal care products. It's been pretty interesting reading. For instance, non-organic products often rate a lot better than organic ones. (We're talking toiletries, not food).

I have loved everything by Burts Bee's, but lately I've been thinking I'm not crazy about the baby soap and lotion for Ty. It seems to leave his skin dry, especially his head. And I think it sometimes makes him a little rashy. Turns out California Baby has a much better safety rating, and you can get it at Target too. I think we'll be making a switch!

Last week we had the carpet cleaned. It wasn't done before we moved in and it was really yucky. We couldn't even let poor Ty on the floor once he was ready for church because when we picked him up he would look like Pig Pen.

First we drug everything we could to the kitchen or screen room, then we skeedaddled on out of there. It was a beautiful day so I took my sadly neglected mending basket out on the front porch.

I cranked up the sewing machine while the kids amused themselves falling on their heads on the concrete.

Well, only Eli actually fell on his head. Twice. But there were plenty of scraped knees and elbows on the others. They finally resorted to riding on their butts, which made big holes in their clothes instead of their skin.

They really enjoyed having me right there to watch their antics and I was wondering why I hadn't thought of sewing outside before!

Titus loved being in the walker with everyone outside. He talked to horses and wandered all over the patio. He especially enjoyed eating the flowers.

We should get the carpet cleaned more often :)

Kefir

So, we've all heard about kefir, right? That fermented milk drink so high in b vitamins and about 1001 other things so vital to your health. I've meant to try making kefir for a few years now and I finally decided it was TIME.

So, I go online (the only place to shop) and I order my grains. We wait with anticipation for them to arrive and finally...a little baggie of sour milk/water mixture with some cauliflower-like grains comes.

I get my pricey raw milk ready and read the directions. NO METAL. No metal collindar, or spoon or anything. Rats! I only have a metal collandar with mesh small enough for the precious kefir grains.

I send Mike to Kmart, the only all purpose store in town. No luck, so I'm off to ebay to buy "kefir accessories." A few more days and I have an appropriate collandar.

Back out with the directions. We add the milk, shake it up, and put it on the counter to ferment.

24 hours later it is thick and bubbly, fermented and... DISGUSTING!

Seriously, who drinks this stuff?!? I made a fruit smoothie with it and it tasted like rotten milk with fruit. Not a big hit. One drink made my stomach hurt, but maybe just because I was working so hard to keep it down.

UGH!

I tried again, thinking maybe I did something wrong. I'm just not feelin it.

So, unless so dedicated kefir drinker out there can give me some tips I just don't think we'll be able to be that healthy.

The View From Here

This is the view from the front porch. We are on the side of a hill and enjoy an incredible view of the whole valley. Sooo pretty.

Lookie!

We have started a new chapter in our experiences as a family. Last weekend we drove to Temecula and purchased 2 horses for the family. They are an Arabian mare named Misty and an Arabian gelding named Reeses Pieces (Reeses). The kids are over the moon and I hope the joy at working with them sticks :) Reeses is the bay. His mane was cut a little far back and is in the process of growing out, so he's got a bit of a mohawk going on :) And they both need a little weight. But aren't they pretty??

We stopped in San Bernardino and bought tack. Since they are Arabians, and since the seller didn't answer her phone, we bought all Arabian size. Which doesn't fit of course. It's all too small and needs to go back to the store, 2 1/2 hours away... Maybe I can mail it :) In the meantime, no tack.

I have this romantic idea of raising the kids with horses and farm chores. We both really want them to have the work ethic that comes with being needed and working hard. Our prayer is that the Lord will provide the opportunity to own some land that we can work, even if Mike keeps his day job. Hailey is nearly 12 and we know that the window of opportunity for her to really embrace that lifestyle will be closing soon. We also know that with many of the children still being young, most of the work will fall to us. But we decided to bite the bullet and jump in.

I want to raise another batch of meat birds soon. There are LOTS of critters here though, so we need something pretty secure. Chickens for eggs are high on the list too. And we are hoping to get a garden in next weekend. We'll see :)

Big Boy

Titus is getting so big! Lawsey Mercy we love that boy, we all just eat him up every day. He is growing so fast and there is so much I want to remember. He has a fascination with Ezra, every time Ezra talks Ty just stares at him. And if Ezra is anywhere in range, Titus dive bombs his hair. He loves Ezra's hair. It makes Ezra feel pretty special.

Titus discriminately bestows big, wet, baby kisses and everyone graced with one feels very slimy, grossed out, blessed! He doesn't give them to just anybody, and often they are accompanied by a hug and an aaahhh. SO SWEET.

He scoots/rolls all over the floor and is just starting to get up on his hands and knees. Magazines are a sure target and he will clamber over just about anything to get to them. He is very interested in food and lunges for anything you have, but since the egg yolk fiasco I think we'll wait a while longer. Hmmm, I didn't mention that he seems to be allergic to eggs did I?

Titus loves me to lay my hand on his chest and let him hold onto my finger. Often when he is screaming this will calm him right down. He searches for my hand in the middle of the night too.

Can you see his tooth in the picture above? He has 2 of them now, the second bottom one broke though a few days ago. Because Eli used to think it was hilarious to try to make mamma bleed every time he nursed, I found myself getting really tense when nursing Titus after that first tooth broke through. He has never bitten me though. He'll bite your finger as quick as he can get it in his mouth, he drawn blood on several of us more than once. But he never bites when he kisses and he has never bitten me when nursing. He seems to sense that he shouldn't bite the ummm "hand" that feeds him. Maybe he won't be the daredevil Eli is. Maybe my hair will start to grow back.

He is my most demanding baby, by far. It helps a lot that there is always someone to hold or entertain him. Hmmm, you don't think that has anything to do with it do you??? I'm sure we aren't spoiling him....

I finally broke down and purchased my blessed Ergo and it is all I hoped for. I think I could carry him all day now. He is still adjusting to being on my back, he likes to see my face and sometimes gets frustrated on my back, but each time he likes it a little more. And I can finally work in the kitchen while carrying him. And it doesn't hurt my shoulders and back. I'm a firm believer in the value of baby wearing and I LOVE it.

Nearly every time I pick him up he grabs my neck and gives me a big hug, melts my heart. And when he gives kisses, he doesn't just kiss. He likes to grab both sides of your face in his fists and really plant one :)

He is loud. I mean LOUD. Nothing he does is quiet. He snores. I mean snores so that people are looking around trying to find the source of that sound. He talks at the top of his voice, all the time. Every cry since his very first one has been at the top of his lungs. He just wails :)

There is nothing Ty likes more than being outside. As soon as you open the door and walk out with him, he does a deep inhale and sighs. Just relaxes. He's like his dad that way. He'll spend hours outside with the other kids talking to the trees and watching them jump on the trampoline. I had to get him some little shoes so he would stop scuffing his toes on the driveway and getting stickers in his socks.

He weighs 19.4 pounds and his little legs are all bent up in his carseat. But he still has another 6 months to face backward. And he growls while he eats. A lot. It sends Hailey into hysterics. But it seems that most times he nurses real hard for a few minutes and then he just growls and growls at it. It really is funny :)

Those are tiny little Levi's he has on. They are the cutest thing, I love resale stores!!

TIme With Daddy: Part 3 The Rodeo

The Annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo was wrapping up while Mike was here. The children had been longing/begging/wishing/praying/hoping we would go. So, I used some of that overtime money to buy tickets online just before I knew I had repairs to make :)

We went in the early afternoon and the kids had a grand time. We saw the bird show and Sierra got to feed a bird with a big knot on it's beak. I can't remember the name of the bird, but I can remember some cool details about it. After it lays it eggs, the males wall it up inside a tree until the young are big enough to come out. Or something like that. I definitely remember there was a wall.... Anyway, Sierra fed a big bird fruit.

After walking around looking at things for a while we headed over to the rides. It was dollar day so all the rides were $1.00 a piece. We decided to spend $20. Plenty we thought. But, people kept giving us more tickets! If we had known, we wouldn't have bought any at all. We would have just traipsed through with our crew hoping we looked like a family who could use a few tickets. I recommmend you try it before shelling out the cash ;) So the kids got to go on lots of rides. To Hailey's supreme disappiontment she couldn't get anyone to go on the upside down rides with her. She finally gave up and rode a few alone. Where does she get it????

We spent a long time on the rides, and it seems that was the only place I took any pictures. But the real highlight was the rodeo.

Our seats were definitely in the nosebleed catagory, but it was set up so that everyone could see quite well and there were also t.v. screens. I think the highlight was the bucking bronc riding, but kids riding sheep was pretty fun too. Mutton something or rather...

Time With Daddy: Part 2

After our our hike we took our lunch and headed for the picnic grounds. They were really pretty and clean, and right on the water. The kids could not have been more thrilled. They ran down to the water, rolled up their pants/lifted their skirts and waded in while we made lunch. It was really beautiful and relaxing. I can't believe we didn't go earlier.

There were other people there, playing in the water and fishing. One little boy went a bit downstream from us and cast his pole in the water. Eli ran over to see him, wading exuberantly into the water very near the boys line. The boy told Eli, "I'm Fishing!" Eli: "I Know!!", all smiling, and happy. Looking around like he might see a fish on the line. Also looking completely unconcerned as the boy marched off.

It was Titus' 6 month birthday too. I can't believe he is 6months old already. He weighs 19.4 pounds and is just getting in to a size 12 months! He has gotten up on his knees a couple of times, and is doing the ol' combo roll/scoot to get where he want to go. He as one tooth in, one very nearly in, and two very swollen top gums.

After a really nice couple of hours at the water we went home to a dinner of tacos and chocolate pie.



And daddy gave Sierra her belated birthday blessing. She thought he forgot, but he surprised her.
All in all, a really nice day!

No Child Left Behind

I have often said that with No Child Left behind legislation they would have to come after homeschoolers sooner or later. We can't have a national curriculum without getting ALL the children on board. Huckabees support of NCLB is one of my big issues with his candidacy. NCLB currently has a provision excluding private and home schools from its tentacles. So, they are coming in the back door.

Tennessee homeschoolers are facing the most serious threat to their freedom
since the homeschool law was enacted 23 years ago. House Bill 2795 would
subject non-public school students, including homeschool students, to
additional state testing. It would require them to take subject matter tests
based upon state-approved textbooks. It would also require them to pass the
Tennessee comprehensive assessment program tests before receiving a high
school diploma. These new testing requirements would also apply to students
being taught at home through extension or satellite programs of church-related schools. Your calls to state representatives are needed to stop this dangerous legislation! If House bill 2795 passes, it will essentially mean the end of homeschooling in Tennessee. Parents deciding to teach their children at home would have to conform their curriculum to the material taught in public school in order for their children to be able to pass the state tests. The Tennessee Department of
Education, not parents, would determine whether a student taught at home was
eligible to receive a high school diploma.

A bill very similar to this one is in the works in Nebraska. Even as public school teachers around the country complain about the need to "teach to the test", legislators are trying to impose the same requirements on homeschoolers. I hope the homeschoolers, and everyone else in Tennessee who believes in the constitutional pursuit of liberty, will fight. And I hope this is a lesson to homeschoolers everywhere. We do not exist in a bubble. The direction being taken in the public schools does effect us. Not only will there be constant attempts to trickle down the regulations to our homeschools, but most of the next generation is being educated there. I think it is right for Christians to leave the public school system. I truly believe our children have no place there. At the same time, I don't think we should turn our back on those children that are there. We should fight bad legislation and take a hard look at the people we elect.

Miss Hailey got a haircut today. It's the first time she's had more than a trim in many years. She was a little nervous that they were cutting too much off, but she really likes it. I think it's really pretty :)
